The Action to Protect and Enhance Civic Space in Zimbabwe (APECS) project seeks to defend and expand civic space by promoting an enabling environment for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across all levels of their influence and operations. Through this initiative, NANGO is working to influence the development and reform of legal, policy, and operational frameworks that govern CSO activity, aiming to ensure these instruments support, rather than restrict, civic engagement. The project also strengthens coordination among CSOs, builds collective movements, and enhances their capacity to adapt and respond to a rapidly shifting civic and operational landscape. APECS leverages data and technology to track and monitor trends affecting civic space, enabling timely and informed advocacy and safeguarding efforts. Additionally, the project localises and implements NGO sector standards and codes of conduct to reinforce legitimacy, autonomy, and accountability. APECS is a proactive step towards protecting the vibrancy and independence of Zimbabwe’s civil society by May 2025.
