NANGO in collaboration with other like-minded civic actors is a member of the steering committee mandated to ensure mobilisation and meaningful participation of CSOs for effective engagement with the UPR country processes. The UPR is a human rights mechanism created by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly as a procedure of the UN Human Rights Council to review the implementation of human rights in all the UN Member States. It involves the review of the human rights situations of all UN Member States once every four years. It is a State driven process, which provides the opportunity for each State to identify key human rights issues and challenges as well as to periodically declare what actions it has taken to improve human rights situations and fulfil human rights obligations.

The role of NANGO in UPR Process include:

  • Facilitate CSOs participation in the development of the national UPR Report;
  • Facilitate CSOs participation in the development of CSO UPR alternative Report;
  • Facilitate side-line events during the country’s presentation to the Human Rights Council (HRC);
  • Provide post-UPR feedback for joint tracking of adoption of UPR recommendations and;
  • Monitor and track the implementation of the adopted UPR Recommendations.
