Harare, Zimbabwe – The National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (NANGO) extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families, communities, and all those affected by the tragic Lake Kariba ferry disaster. NANGO is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the suffering caused by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, those still awaiting news of missing relatives, the survivors recovering from the ordeal, and the wider communities affected by this devastating incident.
We also extend our appreciation to the rescue teams, divers, boat crews, volunteers, local fishermen, community members, and all other stakeholders who continue to work tirelessly under extremely difficult circumstances to support search, rescue, and recovery efforts. Lake Kariba is central to the lives and livelihoods of many communities, serving as an important means of connecting families and accessing markets, schools, health services, and other essential facilities. The impact of this tragedy therefore extends far beyond those directly involved in the incident and will be felt by families and communities for a long time.
NANGO recognises and appreciates the efforts of civil society organisations, humanitarian actors, community-based organisations and other stakeholders who are responding to the needs of affected communities. CSOs that have the means, capacity and relevant expertise are strongly encouraged to join hands with government, humanitarian agencies, local communities and other stakeholders in providing appropriate forms of assistance to affected families and survivors. Such support may include psychosocial assistance, emergency relief, family support, community-based assistance and other interventions identified through the ongoing response.
We further appeal to the public and all stakeholders to rely on credible and verified information when sharing updates concerning the disaster, particularly information relating to those who are missing or affected. During such a painful period, responsible communication is essential to protect grieving families from further distress and to preserve the dignity of those affected.
While the immediate priority remains saving lives, supporting survivors, recovering those who may still be missing, and assisting bereaved families, NANGO also recognises the need for sustained psychosocial support beyond the immediate emergency response. The effects of such a tragedy can endure for many years, and affected families and communities may require continued assistance as they begin the difficult process of recovery and healing.
NANGO joins the nation in mourning those who have lost their lives and stands in solidarity with the people of Kariba and all communities affected by this tragedy.
May the families who have lost loved ones find strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may those still missing be found safely. Our thoughts, empathy, and prayers remain with all those affected.
