UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Vacancies 2026 – Apply Now

The Secretariat of the United Nations Human Rights Council is inviting applications from qualified individuals for three Special Rapporteur mandate holder positions, to be filled during its 62nd Session (15 June – 10 July 2026).

This is a unique opportunity for experienced human rights professionals to contribute to global human rights advancement through independent expert mandates.


📌 Available Mandates

Applications are open for the following positions:

  1. Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes (HRC Resolution 54/10)

  2. Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression (HRC Resolution 52/9)
    Note: Appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate.

  3. Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (HRC Resolution 60/10)


👤 Who Should Apply?

Eligible candidates should have:

  • Extensive and internationally recognized expertise in human rights

  • Strong experience aligned to the specific mandate theme

  • The ability to operate independently and impartially

  • Availability to commit significant time to mandate responsibilities


🛠️ Key Responsibilities

Mandate holders serve in their personal capacity and are expected to:

  • Participate in Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva and UN General Assembly sessions in New York

  • Undertake approximately two country visits per year

  • Draft and present reports within set deadlines

  • Engage with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders

  • Address allegations of human rights violations

  • Provide expert advice on thematic human rights issues

⏱️ Estimated commitment: 4–6 months per year


💼 Important Terms

  • These positions are unpaid

  • Mandate holders are not UN staff members

  • No salary or financial compensation is provided

  • Travel costs and daily subsistence allowances are covered as per UN regulations
